Reading/Discussion Seminars

This is a series of meetings to discuss topics related to the use of Optimization and Operational Reseach techniques applied to problems in energy. They are a mixture of reading seminars where some interesting published work with be discussed, and informal lead discussion of ongoing work, and more formal seminars.

Ian Wallace "Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) Solvers"
Thursday 6th December 2012 at 10:00 in JCMB 1501

Abstract: I will present the basic principles/algorithms for solving MINLP problems. As well I will look at how some of the open-source solvers implement these ideas in practice, and how well-suited they are to the Blackout Islanding problem in particular.

Tim Schulze "The EDF Day Ahead Unit Commitment System"
    Friday 12th October 2012 at 11:00 in JCMB 6311

Abstract: The Elecricite de France (EDF) energy system consists of aroud 60 thermal units - mostly nuclear - and 50 hydro valleys. These generators have to be scheduled optimally on a day to day basis. EDF has developed a proprietary software tool to calculate a 24h ahead reference schedule, based on a two-phase Lagrangian decomposition scheme. I will give an outline of the algorithm and discuss its performance and weaknesses.
