Harry W. Braden
About
I was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Australia. After an undergraduate degree at Sydney University I obtained my PhD. at the University of Cambridge. Subsequently I had a Fellowship at Corpus Christi College (Cambridge) and postdoctoral positions at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Durham University. I came to Edinburgh in 1990 and retired in 2023. While here I was made Professor Of Integrable Systems and was the Head of School 2011-14. Over the years I have worked in many areas of mathematical physics with complete integrability (both in the classical and quantum regimes) a recurring theme. I have applied my research techniques to a range of problems beyond the horizons of mathematical physics (to problems such as network design and card shuffling).
Research Focus
The main area of application of my work over the years has been in mathematical physics, particularly theoretical high energy physics and general relativity. I have developed new techniques and then used these to solve known problems. A recurring theme has been integrable systems (which has included Affine Toda Field theory, Seiberg-Witten theory and the explicit construction of solutions such as monopoles and black-holes). Several new systems have been discovered with applications made in diverse areas. I am continuing to work on making the construction of monopoles as explicit as possible. You may see two su(2) BPS monopoles approaching head on and scattering through 90° here. An interactive display of a fixed energy density surface of a charge-3 su(2) BPS monopole with V4 (Klein's Vier group) symmetry may be found here.
