The special reduced fibre for second-kind lines
Lemma 25.1 (The special reduced fibre for a second-kind line). Suppose that is of the second kind. Let be the exceptional point of Lemma 23.4. If is reduced, then
Proof. The morphism is given by a base point free subsystem of on ; it contracts the negative section to . Thus , where is another line. Choose a general base line through and let be its inverse image. This surface is smooth: away from the fixed fibre this is Bertini, along its smooth locus it follows from smoothness of the conic bundle, and at its node a general base direction retains the nonzero derivative supplied by smoothness of . The pencil induced on has fixed component and moving part a base point free pencil in . A general member of that pencil is , where are distinct ruling fibres. Put The line is mapped isomorphically to , and is mapped to a line. Consequently , while . Adjunction on the smooth surface gives Here also follows directly from the reduced nodal conic fibre, and the remaining intersections follow from the geometry of and the equalities . In particular, the three points are distinct. The divisors are nef, and .
The refined surface series still has moving and fixed classes given by (24.1). Its asymptotic completeness for follows from ampleness of . For , remove the fixed multiple of . Restriction of to is surjective for : its obstruction is , which is , since and for . The latter statements follow on the blow-up fibres from . Hence the surface flag formulas apply to this weak del Pezzo surface.
First take the flag curve . The decomposition in Lemma 24.3 applies verbatim with its second component equal to . Indeed, is nef: it is effective, has zero intersection with each component of its support, and has nonnegative intersection with every other irreducible curve. Moreover, is the single reduced point . Thus the constants are the same as in that lemma, and every point of has local threshold at least .
It remains to use the flag curve . For , put , so the moving class is . For the parameter of this flag, its Zariski decompositions are To verify nefness, is nef for : the only possible negative intersection of the effective summand is with , where the full intersection is . The first two intervals therefore interpolate between nef endpoint classes. For the other endpoint use , an effective rational divisor with , , hence nef. The negative parts are supported on mutually disjoint negative curves and are orthogonal to their positive parts. Finally , so is the pseudo-effective threshold.
Writing , the three intervals give The required inner integrals are For , scale the decomposition by ; the four inner integrals are respectively , , , . The original fixed part shifts the order along by . After removing this coefficient of , the original fixed divisor that remains on the flag curve is , not . These terms contribute to the expected order along and at each point , respectively. Consequently For clarity, the first point coefficient is , and the second is . The point indicators cannot occur simultaneously. Abban–Zhuang adjunction now gives, for every , This covers both components of the special fibre. ◻
Example 25.2 (The three types of points on the negative section). In the preceding calculation, a point of outside has point term . At either point this becomes , while at it is . These points are distinct, so the two fixed contributions are never added at the same point. In all three cases the larger flag constant is the curve term .
