Pencils, ramification, and geometric invariant theory

Write epe_p for the ramification index of ηU\eta_U at pp, and put RU=∑p∈ℙ1(ep−1)p.R_U=\sum_{p\in\mathbb P^1}(e_p-1)p. By Riemann–Hurwitz, degRU=6\deg R_U=6. The Wronskian WU=fxgy−fygxW_U=f_xg_y-f_yg_x is a binary sextic defined up to a nonzero scalar. Its zero divisor is RUR_U: locally this follows by differentiating g/fg/f, after choosing f(p)≠0f(p)\ne0.

We use the Plücker linearization on Gr(2,H0(ℙ1,𝒪(4)))\operatorname{Gr}(2,H^0(\mathbb P^1,\mathcal O(4))). The following statement concerns GIT. A separate argument is needed to obtain the corresponding assertion for the threefolds.

Proposition 118.1. Every basepoint-free quartic pencil is GIT semistable. Such a pencil is GIT stable if and only if ep≤3e_p\le3 for every pp. There is one GIT-polystable orbit which is not stable, represented by U0=⟨x4,y4⟩U_0=\langle x^4,y^4\rangle. Every other nonstable pencil is strictly GIT semistable and has a unique point of ramification index four.

Proof. Fix p=[1:0]p=[1:0]. Row reduction gives a basis of UU with vanishing orders (0,ep)(0,e_p) at pp. For the one-parameter subgroup λ(t)(x,y)=(t−1x,ty),\lambda(t)(x,y)=(t^{-1}x,ty), the weight of x4−iyix^{4-i}y^i is −4+2i-4+2i. Hence the least nonzero weight of a Plücker vector representing UU is −8+2ep-8+2e_p. Every nontrivial one-parameter subgroup is conjugate to a positive multiple of one of these. In this convention Hilbert–Mumford semistability means that each least weight is nonpositive, and stability means that it is negative. Since 1≤ep≤41\le e_p\le4, this proves the first two assertions.

If ep=4e_p=4, the pencil contains y4y^4, and a second generator has nonzero x4x^4 coefficient. The limit under λ\lambda is ⟨x4,y4⟩\langle x^4,y^4\rangle. The orbit of this pencil consists of the spans of the fourth powers of two independent linear forms. Its boundary in the Grassmannian consists of tangent pencils, equivalent to ⟨x4,x3y⟩\langle x^4,x^3y\rangle. This also follows by extending the secant map from unordered distinct pairs of points on the rational normal quartic to its diagonal. Such a tangent pencil is unstable: at [0:1][0:1] its two vanishing orders are 33 and 44, giving least weight −8+2(3+4)>0-8+2(3+4)>0. Therefore the orbit of U0U_0 is closed in the semistable locus, and every nonstable polystable pencil is equivalent to it.

Finally, two points of index four contribute all six to degRU\deg R_U. Their images are distinct, and coordinates on source and target then identify the map with z↦z4z\mapsto z^4. Thus their pencil is U0U_0. ◻

Lemma 118.2. The strictly GIT-semistable pencils have normal forms Ua,b=⟨x4,y4+ax2y2+bx3y⟩,(a,b)≠(0,0).U_{a,b}=\langle x^4,y^4+ax^2y^2+bx^3y\rangle, \qquad (a,b)\ne(0,0). Two such pencils are equivalent if and only if (a′,b′)=(λ2a,λ3b)(a',b')=(\lambda^2a,\lambda^3b) for some λ≠0\lambda\ne0. Their isomorphism classes are therefore parametrized by ℙ(2,3)\mathbb P(2,3).

Proof. Send the unique point of index four and its image to infinity. The resulting map is a polynomial of degree four. Multiplication by a constant, translation on the source, and translation on the target put it in the form z4+az2+bzz^4+az^2+bz, giving the displayed pencil. If this polynomial had another point of index four, its derivative would equal 4(z−r)34(z-r)^3. Comparing the coefficient of z2z^2 gives r=0r=0, and then a=b=0a=b=0, which is excluded. Any equivalence between two normal forms must preserve the unique totally ramified point and its image. The source and target changes are therefore affine. The missing cubic term forces the source translation to vanish; comparison of leading and constant terms then leaves exactly the indicated weighted scaling. ◻

Lemma 118.3. The pair (ℙ1,14RU)(\mathbb P^1,\frac14R_U) is log Fano and δ(ℙ1,14RU)=4−maxp∈ℙ1(ep−1).\delta\left(\mathbb P^1,\frac14R_U\right) =4-\max_{p\in\mathbb P^1}(e_p-1). In particular, its delta invariant is greater than one precisely when UU is GIT stable.

Proof. Put L=−(Kℙ1+14RU)L=-(K_{\mathbb P^1}+\frac14R_U); it has degree 1/21/2. All coefficients of 14RU\frac14R_U are at most 3/43/4, so the pair is klt. Every divisorial valuation of the function field of a smooth curve is proportional to ordp\operatorname{ord}_p for a point pp. Writing np=ep−1n_p=e_p-1, its log discrepancy is 1−np/41-n_p/4, while SL(ordp)=1degL∫0degL(degL−t)dt=14.S_L(\operatorname{ord}_p) =\frac{1}{\deg L}\int_0^{\deg L}(\deg L-t)\,dt =\frac14. Taking the infimum of the ratio of these two quantities proves the formula. The valuative criterion also shows that all these log curves are K-semistable. The usual criterion for weighted points on ℙ1\mathbb P^1 says that equality gives a K-polystable pair only when RU=3p+3qR_U=3p+3q, with p≠qp\ne q; this is precisely the pencil U0U_0. This is the log-curve formulation in [3, Section 7.6]. ◻

Example 118.4. The pencil ⟨x4,y4⟩\langle x^4,y^4\rangle has RU=3[1:0]+3[0:1]R_U=3[1:0]+3[0:1] and log-curve delta invariant one. For ⟨x4,y4+x2y2⟩\langle x^4,y^4+x^2y^2\rangle, the map z↦z4+z2z\mapsto z^4+z^2 has one point of index four at infinity and three simple ramification points. Its log-curve delta invariant is also one, but its pencil is not polystable.

Lemma 118.5. Let TT be the open subset of ℙ(H0(ℙ1,𝒪(4))⊗ℂ2)\mathbb P(H^0(\mathbb P^1,\mathcal O(4))\otimes\mathbb C^2) parametrizing the smooth graph curves above, and let hh be its hyperplane class. For the universal family φ:𝒳→T\varphi\colon\mathcal X\to T, use the normalization λCM=−φ*((−K𝒳/T)4)\lambda_{\mathrm{CM}}=-\varphi_*((-K_{\mathcal X/T})^4). Then λCM=32h\lambda_{\mathrm{CM}}=32h. After quotienting by the changes of basis of the pencil, this is sixteen times the Plücker class.

Proof. On ℙ1×ℙ1×T\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1\times T, write A,BA,B for the classes of the first and second factors. The universal centre has class D=A+4B+hD=A+4B+h. Its normal bundle in ℙ1×ℙ2×T\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^2\times T has Chern classes c1=A+8B+h,c2=4B(A+4B+h).c_1=A+8B+h,\qquad c_2=4B(A+4B+h). The ambient anticanonical divisor restricts to L=2A+6BL=2A+6B on ℙ1×ℙ1×T\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1\times T. The pushforward formulas for a codimension-two blow-up give φ*((−K𝒳/T)4)=prT*(D(−6L2+4Lc1−c12+c2)).\varphi_*((-K_{\mathcal X/T})^4) =\operatorname{pr}_{T*} \bigl(D(-6L^2+4Lc_1-c_1^2+c_2)\bigr). Indeed, the pushforwards of the square, cube, and fourth power of the exceptional divisor are −[𝒞]-[\mathcal C], −i*c1-i_*c_1, and −i*(c12−c2)-i_*(c_1^2-c_2), respectively. Since A2=B2=0A^2=B^2=0, only the coefficient of ABhABh contributes. Its values in DL2DL^2, DLc1DLc_1, and D(c12−c2)D(c_1^2-c_2) are 2424, 3636, and 3232. The required coefficient is therefore −6⋅24+4⋅36−32=−32-6\cdot24+4\cdot36-32=-32, proving the assertion. The Plücker coordinates are the 2×22\times2 minors of the two coefficient vectors, hence have degree two. Its hyperplane class thus pulls back to 2h2h, giving the last assertion. ◻

Remark 118.6. The CM calculation identifies the relevant GIT polarization. It does not show that every special test configuration of XUX_U comes from a degeneration of its quartic pencil. Accordingly, the threefold K-stability assertion still requires the local proof below.
