Section 127

The joining line in a fibre of type (3,1)

We consider the strict transform of the line joining the points of multiplicity three and one in the corresponding plane fibre. The two endpoints are treated separately. Here the base coordinates b0,b1b_0,b_1 are both nonzero.

Theorem 127.1. At every point of this open joining line one has δp(X)≥96/91\delta_p(X)\ge96/91.

Lemma 127.2 (The actual series on the exceptional surface). The exceptional surface of the ordinary blow-up of the joining line is G=𝔽1G=\mathbb F_1, and AX(G)=2A_X(G)=2. Write ξ\xi for the pullback of a line under 𝔽1→ℙ2\mathbb F_1\to\mathbb P^2, and ff for a fibre of its ruling. Use base coordinates b0,b1b_0,b_1 and fibre coordinates a,Ta,T, whose divisor classes are ξ\xi and ξ−f\xi-f, respectively. Put t=b1T,x1=b0a−G0T,G0=Ab02+Bb0b1+Cb12,AC≠0.t=b_1T,\qquad x_1=b_0a-G_0T,\qquad G_0=A b_0^2+B b_0b_1+C b_1^2,\qquad AC\ne0. Let PA=(b0=T=0),PB=(b1=a=0),PC=(b1=x1=0),P_A=(b_0=T=0),\qquad P_B=(b_1=a=0),\qquad P_C=(b_1=x_1=0), and let SS be the blow-up of these three points. The piece of primary degree jj in anticanonical degree mm is as follows, and is zero for j>3mj>3m. For 0≤j≤2m0\le j\le2m, it is the complete system H0(S,jξ+mf−max(j−m,0)(EA+EB+EC)).H^0\left(S,j\xi+mf-\max(j-m,0)(E_A+E_B+E_C)\right). For 2m≤j≤3m2m\le j\le3m, put k=j−2mk=j-2m and n=3m−jn=3m-j. It is (x1t)kH0(S,(m+n)ξ+nf−nEA−mEB−nEC).(x_1t)^k\, H^0\left(S,(m+n)\xi+nf-nE_A-mE_B-nE_C\right). In these formulas ξ,f\xi,f also denote their pullbacks to SS.

Proof. We first justify that these are the actual section spaces. Use the hypersurface realization X⊂𝔽1×ℙ2X\subset\mathbb F_1\times\mathbb P^2 of class h+2Hh+2H; its anticanonical class is h+f+Hh+f+H. The restriction map in every anticanonical degree m≥1m\ge1 is surjective. Indeed, the kernel has class ((m−1)h+mf,(m−2)H)((m-1)h+mf,(m-2)H) and its first cohomology vanishes: for m=1m=1 the factor 𝒪ℙ2(−1)\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^2}(-1) is acyclic, and for m≥2m\ge2 the divisor (m−1)h+mf(m-1)h+mf on 𝔽1\mathbb F_1 is nef. Thus ambient sections give the whole anticanonical section space.

Write the ambient equation as s2q=s1Fs_2q=s_1F. The weights of u,x1,s2u,x_1,s_2 for the ordinary curve extraction are one, and those of v,x0,x2,s1v,x_0,x_2,s_1 are zero. The initial ambient equation is s2x0x2=s1(uG0+vx1x2).s_2x_0x_2=s_1(uG_0+vx_1x_2). This polynomial is irreducible: regarded as a polynomial in s2s_2, its two coefficients are coprime, since AC≠0AC\ne0. Hence its initial ring is integral and the ambient weight filtration is the geometric valuation filtration. The homogeneous quotient therefore gives the actual initial section spaces, including all cancellations.

On the exceptional surface put x0=b0x_0=b_0, x2=b1x_2=b_1, u=tu=t, s2=as_2=a and trivialize v=s1=1v=s_1=1. The initial relation gives the displayed equation for x1x_1. The ambient monomials of anticanonical degree mm show that the actual degree (m,j)(m,j) space is spanned by artix1lb0bb1c,0≤r≤m,0≤i≤2m−r,l+b+c=m,r+i+l=j.a^r t^i x_1^l b_0^b b_1^c,\qquad 0\le r\le m,\quad 0\le i\le2m-r,\quad l+b+c=m,\quad r+i+l=j. All these sections vanish to order at least max(j−m,0)\max(j-m,0) at PA,PB,PCP_A,P_B,P_C. If j>2mj>2m, the inequalities force both l≥j−2ml\ge j-2m and i≥j−2mi\ge j-2m. Factoring (x1t)k(x_1t)^k gives precisely the residual vanishing conditions in the statement. This proves containment in the asserted complete systems.

Here is a dimension check which also proves equality. Regard SS as the blow-up of ℙ2\mathbb P^2 at four points, one infinitely near the first. Let h,e0,e1,e2,e3h,e_0,e_1,e_2,e_3 be the usual orthogonal basis, with ξ=h\xi=h, f=h−e0f=h-e_0, and EA=e1,EB=e2,EC=e3E_A=e_1,E_B=e_2,E_C=e_3. The negative curves are e0−e1,h−e0−e2−e3,e1,e2,e3,h−e0−e1.e_0-e_1,\quad h-e_0-e_2-e_3,\quad e_1,\quad e_2,\quad e_3,\quad h-e_0-e_1. The first two have square −2-2 and meet once; the others have square −1-1. This is a weak del Pezzo surface of degree five. Intersection with this list shows that every residual divisor in the statement is nef. Riemann–Roch and vanishing therefore give its dimension as dm,j={(j+1)(2m+j+2)/2,0≤j≤m,−j2+4jm−3m2/2+5m/2+1,m≤j≤2m,m(2n+1)+(n+1)(n+2)/2,2m≤j≤3m.d_{m,j}=\begin{cases} (j+1)(2m+j+2)/2,&0\le j\le m,\\ -j^2+4jm-3m^2/2+5m/2+1,&m\le j\le2m,\\ m(2n+1)+(n+1)(n+2)/2,&2m\le j\le3m. \end{cases} Their sum is (2m+1)(2m2+2m+1)=h0(X,−mKX)(2m+1)(2m^2+2m+1)=h^0(X,-mK_X). Taking an associated graded preserves dimension, so every containment above is an equality. ◻

Lemma 127.3 (The expected order of the joining line). For the exceptional divisor GG one has SX(G)=13/8S_X(G)=13/8.

Proof. The preceding dimensions give ∑j=03mjdm,j=m(13m3+18m2+12m+3)2.\sum_{j=0}^{3m}j d_{m,j} =\frac{m(13m^3+18m^2+12m+3)}2. Divide by m(2m+1)(2m2+2m+1)m(2m+1)(2m^2+2m+1) and pass to the limit. ◻

Lemma 127.4 (The surface flag over an open base point). Let F⊂GF\subset G be a ruling fibre with b0b1≠0b_0b_1\ne0. For the actual refined series, its expected order is 271/384271/384. The subsequent point expected order is at most 91/9691/96 at every point of FF.

Proof. The blow-up S→GS\to G is an isomorphism near FF. Normalize the primary degree by u=j/mu=j/m. The nef residual divisors in Lemma 127.2 are Du={(u+1)h−e0,0≤u≤1,(u+1)h−e0−(u−1)(e1+e2+e3),1≤u≤2,(7−2u)h−(3−u)(e0+e1+e3)−e2,2≤u≤3.D_u=\begin{cases} (u+1)h-e_0,&0\le u\le1,\\ (u+1)h-e_0-(u-1)(e_1+e_2+e_3),&1\le u\le2,\\ (7-2u)h-(3-u)(e_0+e_1+e_3)-e_2,&2\le u\le3. \end{cases} For u≥2u\ge2 there is also the fixed divisor (u−2)((x1=0)+(t=0))(u-2)((x_1=0)+(t=0)). Put Du−vF=P(u,v)+N(u,v)D_u-vF=P(u,v)+N(u,v) for its Zariski decomposition on this surface. Write p=P(u,v)⋅Fp=P(u,v)\cdot F and write nn for the coefficient of E=e0−e1E=e_0-e_1 in N(u,v)N(u,v). The following table gives all chambers. A polygon is specified by its vertices (u,v)(u,v); boundaries may be assigned to either adjacent chamber. verticespn(0,0),(1,0),(1,1),(0,1)u0(1,1),(1,2),(0,1)u−v+1v−1(1,0),(2,0),(1,1)u0(2,0),(3/2,3/2),(1,1)u/2−v/2+1(u+v−2)/2(2,0),(2,3/2),(3/2,3/2)2−2v/3(3u+2v−6)/3(1,2),(1,1),(3/2,3/2)u−v+1v−1(2,3/2),(2,2),(1,2),(3/2,3/2)4−2vu+2v−4(2,0),(3,0),(2,3/2)4−u−2v/32v/3(3,0),(2,2),(2,3/2)10−3u−2v2(u+v−3).\begin{array}{c|c|c} \text{vertices}&p&n\\\hline (0,0),(1,0),(1,1),(0,1)&u&0\\ (1,1),(1,2),(0,1)&u-v+1&v-1\\ (1,0),(2,0),(1,1)&u&0\\ (2,0),(3/2,3/2),(1,1)&u/2-v/2+1&(u+v-2)/2\\ (2,0),(2,3/2),(3/2,3/2)&2-2v/3&(3u+2v-6)/3\\ (1,2),(1,1),(3/2,3/2)&u-v+1&v-1\\ (2,3/2),(2,2),(1,2),(3/2,3/2)&4-2v&u+2v-4\\ (2,0),(3,0),(2,3/2)&4-u-2v/3&2v/3\\ (3,0),(2,2),(2,3/2)&10-3u-2v&2(u+v-3). \end{array} These formulas follow by imposing P⋅C=0P\cdot C=0 on the negative curves in the support and checking nonnegative intersections with the six curves listed above. The other components of NN are vertical and are disjoint from FF. The volume is determined explicitly by P(u,v)2=Du2−2∫0vp(u,s)ds,Du2={u2+2u,0≤u≤1,−2u2+8u−3,1≤u≤2,u2−10u+21,2≤u≤3.P(u,v)^2=D_u^2-2\int_0^v p(u,s)\,ds,\qquad D_u^2=\begin{cases} u^2+2u,&0\le u\le1,\\ -2u^2+8u-3,&1\le u\le2,\\ u^2-10u+21,&2\le u\le3. \end{cases}

Set k=max(u−2,0)k=\max(u-2,0). Integration over the displayed polygons gives range of u∬P2∬p2∬2p(n+k)∬2pk[0,1]11/125/121/120[1,2]55/1611/47/60[2,3]31/243/25/33/4.\begin{array}{c|cccc} \text{range of }u&\iint P^2&\iint p^2&\iint 2p(n+k)&\iint 2pk\\\hline {[0,1]}&11/12&5/12&1/12&0\\ {[1,2]}&55/16&11/4&7/6&0\\ {[2,3]}&31/24&3/2&5/3&3/4. \end{array} The normalization is 1/81/8, since h0(X,−mKX)=4m3+O(m2)h^0(X,-mK_X)=4m^3+O(m^2) and surface volumes are twice the leading coefficient of the dimension. Thus the fibre expected order is 271/384271/384, and the moving point contribution is 7/127/12.

The only possible fixed contributions on FF are at its intersections with E=(T=0)E=(T=0) and with (x1=0)(x_1=0). These points are distinct when b0b1≠0b_0b_1\ne0. At the first point the additional contribution is 35/9635/96, and at the second it is 3/323/32. Consequently the point expected orders are 9196,6596,712,\frac{91}{96},\qquad\frac{65}{96},\qquad\frac7{12}, respectively at those two points and elsewhere. This proves the assertion. ◻

Example 127.5. In anticanonical degree one the primary pieces have dimensions 2,5,6,22,5,6,2. The final piece is x1t⟨a,t⟩x_1t\langle a,t\rangle. In degree two their dimensions are 3,7,12,15,16,9,33,7,12,15,16,9,3. In particular, the fixed factors for j>2mj>2m cannot be omitted.

Proof of Theorem 127.1. Surface adjunction along the ruling fibre, followed by point adjunction, gives δ(G;WG)|b0b1≠0≥min{384271,9691}=9691.\delta(G;W^G)\big|_{b_0b_1\ne0} \ge\min\left\{\frac{384}{271},\frac{96}{91}\right\} =\frac{96}{91}. Abban–Zhuang adjunction for the ordinary curve extraction now gives δp(X)≥min{1613,9691}=9691.\delta_p(X)\ge \min\left\{\frac{16}{13},\frac{96}{91}\right\} =\frac{96}{91}. No Zariski decomposition on a modification of the threefold is used. The all-degree calculation identifies the actual refined series, including its fixed factors. The displayed Zariski decompositions take place only on the blown-up exceptional surface. ◻

127.1 The simple endpoint

The simple endpoint of the joining line is b0=0b_0=0. Indeed, under [x0:x1:x2]=[s2:st:t2][x_0:x_1:x_2]=[s^2:st:t^2], the equation x1x2=0x_1x_2=0 restricts to st3=0st^3=0. Only PAP_A lies on the fibre of GG over this endpoint. We retain the notation of Lemma 127.2. Put E=e0−e1,F0=h−e0−e2−e3,FA=h−e0−e1,C=2h−e0−e1−e3.E=e_0-e_1,\qquad F_0=h-e_0-e_2-e_3,\qquad F_A=h-e_0-e_1,\qquad C=2h-e_0-e_1-e_3. Here FAF_A is the strict transform of the fibre b0=0b_0=0, and CC is the strict transform of (x1=0)(x_1=0).

Lemma 127.6. At the simple endpoint pp of the joining line one has δp(X)≥96/91\delta_p(X)\ge96/91.

Proof. We calculate on the same surface SS. For u=j/mu=j/m, the full pullback of the refined series has nef moving class DuD_u from Lemma 127.4, and fixed part (u−1)+(e1+e2+e3)+(u−2)+(C+E+F0),(u-1)_+(e_1+e_2+e_3)+(u-2)_+(C+E+F_0), up to bounded rounding terms. These exceptional fixed coefficients are essential for the calculation at PAP_A.

First consider a point of b0=0b_0=0 different from PAP_A. For Du−vFA=P+ND_u-vF_A=P+N, the negative parts are as follows. If 0≤u≤10\le u\le1, put s=(v−1)+s=(v-1)_+; then N=sE+(v+s)e1.N=sE+(v+s)e_1. If 1≤u≤21\le u\le2, put r=(v+1−u)+r=(v+1-u)_+, s=(v−1)+s=(v-1)_+ and t=(u+v−3)+t=(u+v-3)_+; then N=(s+t)E+tF0+(r+s+t)e1.N=(s+t)E+tF_0+(r+s+t)e_1. If 2≤u≤32\le u\le3, put t=(u+v−3)+t=(u+v-3)_+; then N=2tE+tF0+3te1.N=2tE+tF_0+3te_1. The thresholds in these three ranges are u+1u+1, 22 and 6−2u6-2u, respectively. The nef classes hh for u≤1u\le1 and h−e2h-e_2 for u≥1u\ge1 exclude larger values of vv. As before, these formulas are verified by zero intersection with the support, nonnegative intersection with the six negative curves, and negative definiteness of the support. Integration gives 18∫∫P2dvdu=34,18∫∫(P⋅FA)2dvdu=712.\frac18\int\!\int P^2\,dv\,du=\frac34, \qquad \frac18\int\!\int(P\cdot F_A)^2\,dv\,du=\frac7{12}. The only other negative curve meeting FAF_A is e1e_1, and their intersection maps to PAP_A. None of C,E,F0C,E,F_0 meets FAF_A. Thus at every other point of the original fibre the flag bound is at least min(4/3,12/7)=4/3\min(4/3,12/7)=4/3.

It remains to consider PAP_A. Extract this point by the ordinary blow-up; its exceptional curve is e1e_1 and its log discrepancy over GG is two. For Du−ve1=P+ND_u-ve_1=P+N we give the complete negative parts in a compact form. For 0≤u≤10\le u\le1, N=(v−1)+2E+(v−u)+FA.N=\frac{(v-1)_+}{2}E+(v-u)_+F_A. For 1≤u≤21\le u\le2, set r=(u+v−2)+r=(u+v-2)_+ and s=(3u+v−6)+s=(3u+v-6)_+; then N=(r2+s6)E+s3F0+(v−1)+FA.N=\left(\frac r2+\frac s6\right)E+\frac{s}{3}F_0 +(v-1)_+F_A. For 2≤u≤32\le u\le3, set s=(3u+v−9)+s=(3u+v-9)_+; then N=2v+s3E+v+2s3F0+se3+(v−1)+FA.N=\frac{2v+s}{3}E+\frac{v+2s}{3}F_0+s e_3 +(v-1)_+F_A. The thresholds are 2u+12u+1, 33 and 7−2u7-2u, respectively. The nef classes 2h−e0−e12h-e_0-e_1 for u≤1u\le1 and 2h−e0−e1−e22h-e_0-e_1-e_2 for u≥1u\ge1 exclude larger values. These formulas comprise twelve chambers and pass the same intersection checks. Write l=P⋅e1l=P\cdot e_1 and put k=(u−2)+k=(u-2)_+. The integrals are 18∫∫P2=10796,18∫13(u−1)Du2du=6596,18∫∫l2=115288,14∫∫l(NE+k)=79144,14∫∫lNFA=101288,14∫∫lk=332.\begin{aligned} \frac18\int\!\int P^2&=\frac{107}{96},\qquad \frac18\int_1^3(u-1)D_u^2\,du=\frac{65}{96},\\ \frac18\int\!\int l^2&=\frac{115}{288},\qquad \frac14\int\!\int l(N_E+k)=\frac{79}{144},\\ \frac14\int\!\int lN_{F_A}&=\frac{101}{288},\qquad \frac14\int\!\int lk=\frac3{32}. \end{aligned} All double integrals use the stated thresholds and measure dvdudv\,du. For example, they are evaluated by splitting at the zeros of the affine functions inside ()+(\ )_+. The first expected order, including the fixed coefficient of e1e_1, is therefore 43/2443/24.

The curves E,FA,CE,F_A,C meet e1e_1 at three distinct points. In local coordinates at PAP_A their tangent directions are T=0T=0, b0=0b_0=0 and b0−γT=0b_0-\gamma T=0, with γ≠0\gamma\ne0. The point moments at these three points and elsewhere are, respectively, 9196,34,71144,115288.\frac{91}{96},\qquad\frac34,\qquad \frac{71}{144},\qquad\frac{115}{288}. There is no different for this ordinary point extraction. Consequently δPA(G;WG)≥min{4843,9691,43,14471,288115}=9691.\delta_{P_A}(G;W^G)\ge \min\left\{\frac{48}{43},\frac{96}{91},\frac43, \frac{144}{71},\frac{288}{115}\right\} =\frac{96}{91}. This covers the whole exceptional fibre over the simple endpoint. The threefold adjunction bound is then δp(X)≥min{1613,9691}=9691.\delta_p(X)\ge \min\left\{\frac{16}{13},\frac{96}{91}\right\} =\frac{96}{91}. ◻
