The exceptional ruling over an index-three point

Lemma 125.1 (Specialization of a marked point). Let 𝒳→𝔸1\mathcal X\to\mathbb A^1 be a normal ℚ\mathbb Q-Gorenstein family of klt Fano varieties, equipped with a 𝔾m\mathbb G_m-action covering multiplication on 𝔸1\mathbb A^1. Suppose that its restriction to 𝔾m\mathbb G_m is equivariantly isomorphic to X×𝔾mX\times\mathbb G_m, and that the orbit of p∈Xp\in X extends to a section with value p0∈X0p_0\in X_0. Then δp(X)≥δp0(X0).\delta_p(X)\ge\delta_{p_0}(X_0).

Proof. For a positive integer mm divisible enough to make −mK-mK Cartier, let δm,p\delta_{m,p} be the infimum of the local log canonical thresholds at pp of the mm-basis divisors. Thus δm,p(X)=infp∈cX(F)AX(F)Sm(F).\delta_{m,p}(X)=\inf_{p\in c_X(F)}\frac{A_X(F)}{S_m(F)}. One has δm,p→δp\delta_{m,p}\to\delta_p. Indeed, [6, Corollary 2.10] gives Sm(F)≤(1+η)S(F)S_m(F)\le(1+\eta)S(F) for all valuations and all sufficiently large mm, so δm,p≥δp/(1+η)\delta_{m,p}\ge\delta_p/(1+\eta). Conversely, fix any divisor whose centre contains pp and use Sm(F)→S(F)S_m(F)\to S(F), then take the infimum over these divisors. This gives the opposite limiting inequality. Relative vanishing and base change identify the spaces of anticanonical sections with a free module over ℂ[s]\mathbb C[s]. The equivariant structure determines a finite filtration of H0(X,−mKX)H^0(X,-mK_X); its associated graded is H0(X0,−mKX0)H^0(X_0,-mK_{X_0}). Fix a prime divisor over XX whose centre contains pp, and choose a basis compatible with both its valuation filtration and this finite filtration. Two finite filtrations always have a common compatible basis. Rescaling the resulting sections by powers of ss gives a family of bases whose central values form a basis of H0(X0,−mKX0)H^0(X_0,-mK_{X_0}).

The corresponding basis divisors specialize flatly. Lower semicontinuity of log canonical thresholds along the given section shows that the threshold of the original basis divisor at pp is at least the local mm-basis threshold of X0X_0 at p0p_0. Since the original basis was adapted to the chosen valuation, taking the infimum over valuations gives the same inequality for the local mm-basis thresholds. Passing to the limit as mm tends to infinity proves the assertion. ◻

Lemma 125.2 (The exceptional fibre over an index-three point). Let q∈Cq\in C have ramification index three. Let ℓ\ell be the fibre of the exceptional divisor of X→ℙ1×ℙ2X\to\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^2 over qq, and let p*∈ℓp_*\in\ell be the A2A_2 point of the del Pezzo fibre. Then every p∈ℓ\{p*}p\in\ell\setminus\{p_*\} satisfies δp(X)≥1211.\delta_p(X)\ge\frac{12}{11}.

Proof. Points on the distinguished surface EE already have this bound. Choose coordinates in which f=x3y+αx4,g=y4+g1xy3+g2x2y2+g3x3y+g4x4,f=x^3y+\alpha x^4,\qquad g=y^4+g_1xy^3+g_2x^2y^2+g_3x^3y+g_4x^4, and the centre has equation uf+vg=0uf+vg=0. Consider the family u(x3y+sαx4)+v(y4+∑i=14sigixiy4−i)=0.u(x^3y+s\alpha x^4)+v\left(y^4+ \sum_{i=1}^4s^ig_ix^iy^{4-i}\right)=0. For s≠0s\ne0 the substitutions x′=sxx'=sx, y′=yy'=y, u′=uu'=u, v′=s3vv'=s^3v identify its member with the original curve. The family of blow-ups is equivalently the family of divisors of class h+2Hh+2H in 𝔽1×ℙ2\mathbb F_1\times\mathbb P^2 obtained from the net of quadrics. Here hh is the pullback of a line from ℙ2\mathbb P^2 and f1f_1 is a ruling of 𝔽1\mathbb F_1. Consequently its relative anticanonical class is the restriction of h+f1+Hh+f_1+H, which is ample.

The central net is ⟨Y0Y2−Y12,Y1Y2,Y02⟩.\langle Y_0Y_2-Y_1^2,\ Y_1Y_2,\ Y_0^2\rangle. Its incidence threefold has just one ordinary double point, over [Y0:Y1:Y2]=[0:0:1][Y_0:Y_1:Y_2]=[0:0:1] and the coefficient of Y02Y_0^2. Indeed, on the corresponding affine chart its quadratic part is as+bt+s2as+bt+s^2, a nondegenerate quadratic form in four variables. The blow-up of the smooth fibre of the first generator takes place away from this point. Thus the central member is a nodal Fano threefold. The distinguished surface remains smooth.

We record the marked point carefully. On u=Y0=1u=Y_0=1 put x=Y1x=Y_1, c=Y2c=Y_2, z=c−x2z=c-x^2, and a=xc+αc2+tG(x,c)z.a=\frac{xc+\alpha c^2+tG(x,c)}{z}. The point p*p_* has a=0a=0. The given point has a finite value a=a0≠0a=a_0\ne0, since the value infinity is the point on EE. Under the displayed isomorphism the original exceptional coordinate and the coordinate on the member over ss satisfy a′=saa'=s a. Hence the marked point on that member has a=a0/sa=a_0/s and specializes to the point of EE over x=t=0x=t=0. In particular, it does not specialize to p*p_*.

The ruling of EE through this limit lies over x=0x=0. The additional vertical component of the central fixed curve lies over x=∞x=\infty, so these two curves are disjoint. Lemma 120.2 therefore applies: its three expected orders are 17/2417/24, 11/1211/12 and at most 7/87/8, and hence δp0(X0)≥12/11\delta_{p_0}(X_0)\ge12/11. Applying the preceding specialization lemma finishes the proof. ◻
